Engaging Leadership in Diversity Event on July 24, 2018
On July 24th, 2018, The WORX hosted an event called “Engaging Leadership in Diversity”. This Effective Strategy Forum had subject matter experts share their insights with 34 employers from a wide variety of industries.
The event focused on building the capacity of organizations to effectively include people with disabilities in their workforces. There were two main components to the event. The first was presentations from three employers that are recognized as inclusion leaders in their industries. The speakers were Carol Hogarth, HR Business Partner with BMO; Helen Danyo, Case Manager with Jazz Aviation; and Nikki King, Plant Manager with Iron Mountain. They shared best practices in their organizations that have helped secure leadership support for diversity and inclusion initiatives aimed at people with disabilities. The second component of the event was a working session where employers in attendance shared what they have done in their organizations and what could be done to help secure leadership support for these initiatives.
Take a look at some of the quotes that came from the event:
"It takes open communication, it takes commitment and it takes a desire as an organization to promote diversity & inclusion, but that’s what we want to do." - Helen Danyo, Jazz Aviation
"We don’t look at Diversity as a program, we look at it as a core value of our company. Don’t focus on what someone can’t do, focus on what they can. Everybody brings something special to the table. We live and breath diversity & inclusion everyday."- Helen Danyo, Jazz Aviation
"An inclusive workplace is one that welcomes all perspectives. Part of our strategy for our Diversity & Inclusion is employee driven, and includes our Count Me In program."- Carol Hogarth, BMO
"The amount of people disclosing their disability has really opened up the conversation within the team. It went from one person with a disability to 30% disclosing, and it’s great! It turns the team into a stronger team" - Nikki King, Iron Mountain
"Promoting inclusion and teamwork is one of Iron Mountain's core values and we live by it. We build teams that reflect the communities that we work in." Nikki King, Iron Mountain
